Best Phone Holder Mounts for Nissan Qashqai & X-Trail
Nissan's two most popular European SUVs – the Qashqai and X-Trail – have evolved significantly with their latest generations. The third-gen Qashqai (J12, 2021+) introduced a floating center console that changes how cup-holder mounts interact with the interior. The third-gen X-Trail (T33, 2022+) scales up the Qashqai formula with more cabin space and a distinct dashboard layout. Both deserve specific attention before you commit to a phone mount.
Nissan Qashqai J12 (2021–2024): The Floating Console Factor
The Qashqai J12's defining interior feature is its floating center console – a console that appears to hover above the floor, with open storage space underneath. This design is visually striking and adds useful under-console storage for bags and chargers. It also changes what "cup-holder mount" means in practice.
The cup holders on the J12 are positioned at the rear of the floating console, ahead of the armrest. They are recessed into the console surface at a slightly forward angle. A standard cup-holder mount base slides in and locks – but the forward angle means the phone arm extends toward the windshield rather than straight up. This is actually useful: the arm ends up closer to the driver's eyeline at a natural angle. Test the exact angle before driving – some mounts need a 10–15 degree adjustment from their factory position.
Qashqai J12 Vent Layout
The J12 has a 9-inch portrait-format touchscreen (12.3 inches on N-Design) mounted in the upper center stack. Below the screen, the climate controls include a row of touch-sensitive buttons with small physical vents on either side. The driver-side and passenger-side dashboard vents are horizontal, positioned at the far ends of the dashboard.
For phone mount purposes: the driver-side outboard vent (far left of dashboard) is too far from the driver's normal gaze path. The center-left area below the infotainment screen has touch climate buttons that should not be obscured. The best vent mount location is the small vent cluster directly to the left of the climate panel – some J12 owners use an extended-arm vent mount here to bring the phone closer to the steering wheel.
Previous Qashqai (J11, 2013–2021)
The J11 had a conventional center console with standard cup holders and a more traditional dashboard layout. Vent positions were typical horizontal placement at center and outboard positions. Any standard universal vent clip mount works well on the J11 – it is a forgiving platform for mount installation.
Nissan X-Trail T33 (2022–2024): Space to Work With
The T33 X-Trail is Nissan's largest family SUV for Europe, and the interior reflects that brief. The dashboard is wider, the console is broader, and the seating position is higher than in the Qashqai. All of these factors create more mount placement options.
The X-Trail's 9-inch infotainment screen sits on a conventional center stack with physical climate controls below. The dashboard has a traditional "shelf" zone above the center stack where an adhesive pad mount can be placed. This is a viable option in the X-Trail where it is not in the Qashqai.
X-Trail Console and Cup Holder Mounts
The T33 X-Trail has deeper and wider cup holders than the Qashqai. A cup-holder mount base seats firmly without wobbling. The cup holders are positioned centrally on the console, placing the phone arm in the center of the cabin – slightly further from the driver than ideal. Use a mount with an arm length of at least 140 mm to bring the phone screen close enough to the driver's eyeline in the larger X-Trail cabin.
X-Trail e-POWER Considerations
The e-POWER (series hybrid) version of the X-Trail adds an energy flow display in the instrument cluster. This does not affect phone mount placement. However, the e-POWER's gear selector is an electronic switch cluster on the center console – it is narrower than a traditional shifter, and cup-holder mounts can occasionally place the phone arm over the selector cluster on some mount designs. Check clearance before using a cup-holder mount on the e-POWER variant.
SUV-Specific Stability Considerations
Both the Qashqai and X-Trail ride on all-season-capable suspension tuned for road use with a comfort bias. This means more body roll in corners and more suspension travel over bumps compared to a sports sedan – which translates to more vibration and tilt transmitted to the phone mount. Any mount used in these SUVs should be tested on a rough road section before committing to it as a daily solution.
For windshield suction mounts in the Qashqai and X-Trail: both models have tall, gently curved windshields. The curve near the base of the windshield is moderate – suction cups contact well. Position suction mounts in the lower third of the windshield to stay within legal mounting zones and to minimize the effect of windshield curvature reducing suction contact area.
ADAS Camera Clearance
Both Qashqai (with ProPILOT Assist) and X-Trail feature forward-facing cameras mounted at the top of the windshield. These cameras feed ProPILOT lane centring, adaptive cruise, and emergency braking. Obstruction by a phone mount – even partially – can cause system warnings or disable ProPILOT on certain firmware versions. Maintain a minimum 150 mm clearance from the camera unit when choosing a windshield mount position.
Smart Alternatives
If you use navigation daily in your Nissan and find phone mounting frustrating – cable management, sun glare, phone overheating – consider that an Android head unit integrates these functions directly into your dashboard, often with a larger screen than the factory unit and without requiring your phone at all.

On both Qashqai and X-Trail, cable routing through the A-pillar is the cleanest option. The A-pillar trim on both models is secured with a single retaining clip at the top and presses in at the bottom – use a plastic trim tool to release it and route the cable alongside the existing wiring. USB-A ports in the center console are standard on both models; USB-C is available on higher trims. Use the appropriate cable for your phone to avoid adapters dangling near the mount.
